Apologies folks:

In my last posting, not all of the wording got through. This is about Heartland bank, not FNBO. There does not appear to be a separate section for Heartland, and the search engine takes you here. However, as Heartland is mentioned below, I thought I'd warn anyone that is checking them out!

In April 09, we attempted to open a Money Market account, but the procedure was an utter mess. We did all what was asked, but kept getting e-mails inviting us to access our account, and when we did, we were not recognized. I'm all for security checks, but you also need to get your hands on your money when you need to. It appears to us, this small operation is trying to move in to the big time with Internet banking, but just is not geared up for it. We phoned them numerous times, to be told our password had been reset and to try again, but it never worked. We gave up and closed the account. Simply, Heartland need to get their act together, and install a secure system whereby things work when the customer wants them to.

their rates remain consistantly among the highest. their website and customer service still feels too amateurish. Their 6% promo last year was wildly successful, then they lost many smaller customers after erronously freezing accounts. They claimed it was an error but I suspect it was a deliberate move to shake off some accounts they were losing money on.

To Simply Gaby.
One of the things I look for in a bank, before I place money in one of their accounts, is how safe they are. BankRate rates all banks and you might want to check them out at:
http://www.bankrate.com/brm/safesound/search.asp

One thing about HSBC I found was they are very slow in moving your funds, and for that reason I gave up on them.

FNBO is slow, but not as bad as HSBC.

When it comes to moving funds in and out of your account you can't beat E-Loan (www.eloan.com/savings)

Good luck,
Rush

This is a response to Simply Gaby.

I don't know anything about Heartland, except I think it pays interest on a quarterly basis instead of monthly like most other accounts. I could be wrong. You should check on that before you decide.

I've not used HSBC, but I suspect that you'll be OK here. The one thing that I noticed about them is that they don't try to offer the best rates like they used to. The rates aren't bad, but HSBC seems to compete with ING DIRECT which cuts rates whenever the FED sneezes.

On the other hand, FNBO kept rates high for longer, but when they finally cut the rate, the cuts were big - but still higher than HSBC. The sign-up process was annoying, but I haven't had any problems with the account. Their rate is no longer the best, but they aren't bad.

I was going to suggest to look at E*TRADE, but they just slashed rates.

Hi.
I am completely new to the savings account system. I have consulted bankrate.com as well as other informative website. I have limited my choices to Heartland Bank Direct, HSBC Direct, and FNBO. Which of the three would you recommend and why?
Thanks in advance.

FNBO does employ one deceptive practice. When you move money into FNBO they do not credit your account until a couple of days after they debit your external account. In effect, they have the use of your money for a couple of days while paying you no interest.

I haven't tried moving funds to another OSA from FNBO, however I would imagine that it would work. Just contact each bank to get the routing number. HSBC's number should be 021001088, but double check on that.

Thanks, Jon. I now have my user ID and password. I have another question. I want to transfer funds between FNBO Direct and HSBC Direct online savings accounts, but I do not have the routing # for each. Is it possible for me to transfer funds between two OSAs? If so, how can I find out the routing # for each OSA?

Thanks for the response.

It's been a long time since I opened my account, so I may have forgotten some of the steps. The account number actually is sent to you as one of the last parts of the process.

First you need to verify the trial deposits in your checking account. It takes about two or three days for the deposits to arrive in your account. Then go to FNBO and select the “Return to Application” button on the top right. Select, “I would like to sign in to an existing application”, then “Verify my trial deposits.” To log in, use your Application ID number (not your account number which you don't have yet) that came in your account approval email.

After that, FNBO pulls funds from your checking account, alerts you that the funds have been received, then sends you an email with your new account number. This happens about two days after you verify your trial deposits. After you get your account number email, you can log in with your account number and choose your security questions and password.

I think that is correct, but like I said, it's been a long time.

After I completed the application, I received an email saying that I have been approved. However, I still cannot access my account because I don't have my user ID and password created yet. When and how do you create a user ID and password?

Been very happy with the service and function of the site. No problems to report or complain about. CSR was extremely friendly and courteous.

I've kept my money here.

Oh, Boy. Get ready for a big rush to the exits if the rate goes to 5.05%.

I spoke with an FNBO Direct rep today who told me that rates will go down to 5.05% after 9/28. That's just not going to cut it for me.

I was pretty perturbed to receive one of those "disconcerting" emails too (Aug. 10), which was nothing compared to how annoyed I got trying to get through on the phone. I keep getting disconnected, but after repeated attempts, someone finally picked up after about half an hour. (Thank goodness for speakerphones.) To keep things short, the rep was very courteous and apologetic and explained that the whole thing was a mistake. I received an email to that effect about 2 1/2 hours later, and again the next day. At least my account remained accessible throughout; but needless to say, getting an email about being frozen and not being able to get through on the phone ... well, I probably don't have to go on. (I image their phone system was jammed by everyone else trying to do what I was.)

I noticed yesterday that they've posted apology on their website. All-in-all, I haven't had too many complaints with FNBO and really appreciate the way they update transaction progress and send emails from start to finish. However, if this nonsense continues, I may be looking for a new home come the end of September.

It appears that FNBO has sent those letters to a lot of people and that it was done in error. Let us know if you have your account access back.

Still, this is disconcerting and representative of past actions by FNBO Direct. Last month they picked on retired people in the same way.

Caution with FNBO Direct:
Set up the account no problem, got an email after a month or so asking for past employer information because of the patriot act. No prolem, the email said I had 30 days to get them the info. A week later, I get an emai saying that my account has been frozen because they do not have this information. And my account is frozen, I can not access it. Calls to cutomer service today keep getting disconnected, as did a call to a # I found in Nebraska. I would just beware FNBO - thank goodness it is not urgent that I get my hands on that cash.

I tried to open an account and it would not accept my checking account. I spoke to three customer service reps and none could help. So I cancelled the application and opened one up at Countrywide with no problems and the same checking account.

Like Jon said, they are free, but a little slow. If you have a large deposit it may be quicker to mail it if your concerned about interest lost.

Transfers by ACH are free and withdrawals are limited to 6 per cycle. Outgoing wire transfers are $15 per transfer.
