I don't care whether he works for them or not (and I doubt he does) -- Caitlan has good reason for being enthusiastic about Provident-Direct. What other institution with this APY has a great, versatile ACH system, no minimums, and ATM access (fee-free at one national network). What I do disagree with is the comment about people not being able to follow instructions. For me the opening process was very sloppy and telephone CSR's didn't seem to know what they were talking about. But that was awhile ago so I don't know if they've improved. Regardless, since the account has been open it's been a pleasure, especially when their APY has reached the upper tiers, which is where it is as I write this (3.75). I can say that online CS has been just fine, and that this is one of the few banks that will actually email you about APY changes (which don't seem to happen often). But put them on your safe-list; yahoo was shunting most of my emails from P-D to the spam folder! (Sorry, no time to proof...)

I mean, we're here to write reviews people, not advertise for banks. Hope they give you a raise for that one, Caitlin...LOL

I just set up a savings account with Provident, with no hassle whatsoever. People may have a problem following directions when it comes to the account verification, this being the only reason I can find that people would give bad reviews. From what I have researched thus far, Provident has one of the best rates available, above e*trade and hsbc direct, plus they just received an award for being one of the best businesses in Maryland, where they are headquartered. Although their online division is a different operation, with its unique glitches, I'm glad to see they are growing and have earned a profit of 16 million this last quarter, giving me the confidence to put my money with them.

Ralph and fasteddie - Don't know if you still need the answers, but yes, you can get an ATM card, and the # of linked accounts appears unlimited (they used to limit to 1, but that changed months ago).

I just called them and spoke with one of them and customer service rep stated that they only allow one linked account, but then she did not sound sure, can anyone tell me in fact how many linked accounts can you have??
Thanks

I just opened an account with Provident and it was absolutely painless. I also have accounts with ING and Emigrant, and opening an account with Provident was just as easy and just as fast. I highly recommend them.

They never asked me to send a copy of my driver's license, so you probably won't be asked. But there's no guarantee of that. E.g., other people report NOT being asked to provide a driver's license copy to ETrade, but they did make me send one. For one account -- I forget which bank -- I saw a post by someone who refused to send a driver's license copy by mail, so they let her fax it instead. As for the ATM card, I never received one, but I never requested one, either, so I can't really answer your question. But I doubt it would be a problem, especially after the account is open. Again, make any requests vis the online-banking CS whenever possible.

Will they send you the ATM/Debit card? Do they require a copy of your driver license?

It took me a long time to get the account up, too. At the end of the online application it said "we'll get back to you," but they never did. So emailed and called several times, always being polite but insistent, and finally started getting a lot of attention from some very nice people (higher than CSR's). I'm glad I persisted. Once you're set up. just be sure to avoid the often-clueless telephone CS in favor of the online-banking CS (quite competent), and everything is very smooth. And again, it's a highly-flexible account with a great ACH system and one of the top rates (as of today).

I'd recommend AGAINST this bank. Filled out everything online two weeks ago. Although they said they would follow up with account info, they never have. Your account goes into a big black hole. Apparently they don't want the business that badly. In any case this is BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

There is one minor watchout when setting up external accounts: In addition to the usual two small verification deposits, Provident-Direct also does two matching withdrawals. So if you are setting up a link to an account with a restriction on the number of monthly withdrawals, be aware that Provident-Direct's verification will use up two of them.

Provident-Direct's Online High-Yield Savings may have recently slid from its lofty 4.50 APY to 3.75, but that still puts it in the top tier (for now, anyway). They offer this rate without the restrictions or problems seen with most of the handful of higher-APY banks, such as minimums and ACH transfer problems/delays. You *may* encounter a few bumps during the account application process, but they have really been improving things lately, e.g., they just replaced the odd and restrictive ACH system with a new one that is fast, allows large transfers, and seems to allow an unlimited number of linked accounts. Do check the fee schedule carefully to avoid possible unexpected fees. BTW, there was no hard credit pull.
